For this project we have a self branding assignment. We have to design a logo or logotype that will be in 3D. We are faced with the problem of figuring out a whole new software for 3D modeling so I not overly excited about that. I have never done any type of 3D work so this is going to be very interesting. I think the biggest struggle will be trying to figure out how to transform a 2D design that I make into a 3D design. Rusty told us about a few programs that we can use to make out logo or logotype, the two that sounded the most helpful and user friendly is Sketchup or Blender. I am going to try to play around with Sketchup first and see if I can get what I want out of that, and if I have time I will play around and try to make out my design in Blender and see which one comes out with the best outcome. But first is first I have to design a logo/logotype. I'm really excited about this because I haven't branded myself since my first class in graphic design and I don't think it was that great. In other words, I have come a far way since then so I'm pretty excited to redo a logo for myself that's original and fits my personality.

My original design for ly logotype was going to be my artist signature, which it pretty unique and detailed. After the first day/6hrs of trying to do my logotype in sketch-up I learned that my design is a bit to hard for my skill with 3D design, so I had to dumb it down a bit. I went from my full name to my initials, SNL, and tried getting that to become something in sketch-up, yeah it was still a no on the SNL. So I had to dumb it up even further and just go with a boring SL. I was able to get that to look somewhat decent in sketch-up so in that aspect I was happy, but over all I was very disappointed in my logotype. I have such high expectations for my signature, then having to ditch that idea to do something simpler was like accepting defeat, which is NOT in my nature. To top that off my dumbed version still was to hard so I had to dummify the already dumbed up logotype, it was like "3D Modeling for Dummies Squared." In the end though I guess I did get something out and it doesn't look to bad, it was just a combination of frustration of having to learn a new program, and disappointment on having to scape ideas, that was causing me to hate this project.

In this project we also got the great chance to learn a new program. Because none of us have ever worked with 3D modeling much, including the teacher, this was all brand new. We were given a few suggestions of programs to use, namily Sketch-up and Blender. I played around with blender for a solid 30 min, before I decided this would take too much time and effort to learn, so I downloaded Sketch-up. Sketch-up was more my speed. I was able to learn the majority of the things by just playing around and using youtube only when it was absolutely necessary. This is how I generally like to learn new programs because I enjoy getting the opportunity to learn as I go and figure out how it works by trial and error. Another thing I love is to be able to try doing something the wrong way or long way in a new program then later figuring out a more appropriate way about it. That way I now know a lot more about the tools available to me than I would have known if I did it the fast or right way to start off with. Now that I'm a little more knowledgeable in Sketch-up I don't hate it as much, but I still don't really like 3D design so there's that. Though I also would say I will not chose to do a project in 3D again if I can. There is this really funny commercial on spotify now though that says, "It's going to be bigger than 3D printing, in 6hrs I will have a keychain!" I wouldn't have found that funny before this project, but I can find it funny now thanks to these projects!
