This assignment we had to make a mailer that the company Society of illustrators would make promoting artists to join their annual exhibition. So what we needed to to do was make an illustration for the back of the mailer and put the text that we were given onto the front in a nice format to make it look nice. For my illustration I thought I would go back to my love for a more dark or grunge feel. This is when I started thinking of a girl who would be chained in prison and who looks like she just got out of a fight, That she won. From this is where I thought of the tag line, "don't let your art be chained."I did a pencil drawing namely because I didn't know how to do it a different way, it had also been a while since I got to take my time and draw so I was excited about doing it. I based the look of her beat up face off of Lara Croft's in the 2009 video game “Tomb Raider” and everything else I used a combination of different images I could find, including images of myself. After I finished the back side of my mailer, the illustration, I had to come up with an aesthetically pleasing look for the back, that would kind of match the feel and message of the illustration and catch phrase. That’s when I started to play with the linking chains going around the text on the front side of the mailer. I didn’t mind the look of it and just stuck with that concept till I came up with my final piece.
